Is Nutrisystem better than a diet pill?
A healthy diet is the key to weight loss, but few people have the time, energy, or know-how to prepare their own low-fat meals. That’s why the Nutrisystem sends you pre-packed meals catered to your personalized diet plan.
Think mail meals sound unappealing? You’re not alone. Nutrisystem customers regularly complain of poor taste, poor quality, and an abundance of salt.
When you factor in that these glorified TV dinners cost more than organic food from the grocery store, the Nutrisystem diet isn’t worth the cost.

Safety and Quality
While Nutrisystem’s website says the sodium count in their meals is within federal guidelines, consumers complain of food packed with salt.
“NutriSystem have stated that their meals contain less than the recommended limit of sodium intake,” said Goulda Downer, Ph.D., a registered dietician who heads Metroplex Health and Nutrition Services in Washington, D.C, told Consumer Affairs.
“This is questionable since their program is based on providing prepackaged process meals (these are typically high in sodium). Most of the sodium in our diet is found mainly in processed and prepared foods. The balance comes from the salt added at the table and in cooking. To preserve shelf life, taste and texture of many foods, manufacturers use salt or other sodium containing compounds.”
Too much can lead to heartburn and high blood pressure.
Effectiveness
To lose significant weight on Nutrisystem, you’ll have to spend months eating unpalatable and unsatisfying meals. You’ll also have to spend hundreds, or maybe thousands, of dollars.
Cost
A Nutrisystem for men basic 28-day meal plan costs $366.61 + 18.95 for shipping. For women, it’s $333.28 plus shipping. The more you order, the cheaper each month becomes. But if you stick with Nutrisystem for more than a month or two, you could end up doling out thousands on poor-quality food.
Customer Service
Nurisystem has an A rating on the Better Business Bureau. However, ConsumerAffairs.com received 33 complaints about the Nutrisystem weight-loss program in 2006. Customers said the food was awful, and they rarely got what they ordered—a problem Nutrisystem credits to high-volume orders and food shortages.
In January of 2009, Canada issued a recall of Nutrisystem’s peanut butter, citing risk of salmonella poisoning.
Here are some Nutrisystem reviews:
“The good thing about nutrisystem is that you won’t starve. It gives you all of the calories and nutrition that your body needs. The bad thing is that the food is HORRIBLE! All of it is bland and dry and the portions are laughable at best. You will be hungry on while on Nutrisystem. Your body will have all it needs, but your stomach will be far from full. …You could do a lot worse as far as diets are concerned, but you could also do a hell of a lot better.” – Takfam
“I did try nurtisystem. It is gross…your stomach will shrink and you wont want to even stick the food in your mouth. …Its just not healthy bacause it is full of preservatives and is not even a full meal plan.” – Stephanie
